Westminster - a photo on Flickriver

            This is a magic lantern slide showing the view from the tower of St. Margaret’s Church looking north. The north side of Parliament Square is visible with King Street bottom left, on the right corner is the Mitre and Dove public house which was the favourite haunt of the Westminster Recruiting sergeants (See below). Further down the street on the left near the “T” junction with King Charles Street and the new Foreign Office is King Street Police Station, the station covered the same area as Cannon Row Police Station, it was demolished with the rest of this block to make way for the New Government Buildings. On the corner of Parliament Street and Bridge Street are two buildings which were demolished in late 1886 to make way for the headquarters of the London and North Western Railway which opened in 1888. At the top centre of the slide there is building work taking place, this is the site of the National Liberal Club and Whitehall Court. Work began on the National Liberal Club in 1884 and finished in 1887, but this is early summer 1886 because the advertisements on the building in Parliament Street include one for "Clito" which was a production by the actor Manager, Wilson Barrett at the Princess's Theatre in Oxford Street and began its short run in early May and ended on 2nd July. There is a Police Constable at the junction of Parliament Street with Bridge Street directing traffic.
