Sirmione - Grotte di Catullo

All'estremo limite della penisola di Sirmione, affacciata sul lago di Garda, c'e' quel che resta di una stupenda villa romana che la tradizione vuole appartenuta a Catullo; e' il piu' grosso complesso dell'Italia Settentrionale, misurava 167 metri di lunghezza x 105 di larghezza. Il poeta mori' nel 54 ac. Si sa per certo che abito' nella zona, ma non se realmente questo stupefacente complesso sia appartenuto a lui e alla sua famiglia. Era su due piani, ancora oggi a visitarne quel che resta si rimane sbigottiti dalle sue dimensioni. L'intera area e' stata acquisita dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, e i rilievi hanno verificato l'esistenza di un precedente edificio sotto l'attuale, e la costruzione di quest'ultimo come progetto unitario, sia nella realizzazione che nella suddivisione degli spazi, che prevedevano anche una zona adibita a terme. Per dare uniformita' al tutto si e' proceduto a tagli della roccia ancora oggi visibili, e a sbancamenti, il che fa si' che la villa si sviluppi su piu' livelli. Il crollo della struttura dovrebbe essere avvenuto nel IV secolo dc, data delle ultime inumazioni rinvenute nell'area. Il termine "grotta" fu affibbiato nel rinascimento, per via di certe cavita' che invece erano le basi su cui poggia la struttura.

This is a roman villa, that the tradition says built up by Catone. The poet died in the 54 ac, we know for sure tha lived in the area, but we don't know if this astonishing building belonged to him and to his family. The size of the villa is 167x105 meters; was build up on different levels, due to the conformation of the area: some rocks were cutted, and what is possible to see now is enormous. Is faced on the Garda lake and situated at the last point of the peninsula of Sirmione. The name is grotta (cave) because the upper part on which the whole villa was build up looks like a cave. There were 2 floors, a termal area, and this is the biggest roman villa of the whole north Italy.
