Die meisten Fangschrecken, wie z. B. die Geistermantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) oder die Europäische Gottesanbeterin (Mantis religiosa) sind tagaktive Lauerjäger, das heißt, sie verharren stundenlang unbeweglich, bis sich ihnen ein Opfer nähert, welches sie dann mit ihren Fangbeinen packen. Dabei zeigen viele Arten Anpassungen an ihre Umgebung, die es ihrer Beute erschweren, sie in ihrer Lauerstellung zu erkennen.
