London, North Western Railway Hotel, North Wall, Dublin.

Built in 1885, the hotel replaced the “The Prince of Wales’ hotel on the site which the LNWR eventually purchased after moving their Dublin - Holyhead Steamer services to North Wall in 1859. By the late 1870’s LNWR had by then built a railway station beside the former hotel to serve it’s streamers on the adjoining quay.

The new hotel was connected by a aerial wooden walkway to the adjoining station (Out of shot, left). The walkway has now been recently removed during redevelopment. The Hotel's now long gone gardens have been described as “ Oasis of green in the desert of surrounding docks & warehouses’.

Taken over & occupied by British Auxiliary forces during the Irish War of Independence in 1921, it often became target, but to appears to escape largely unscath from major damage, The hotel ceased to operate as a hotel during the 1920s after British forces left it and was retained in British Railways ownership for many years until CIE took over ownership and used it as offices for many years.
