            Volkswagen first entered the burgeoning compact crossover segment with the Tiguan (5N) in 2007. The first edition was derived from the PQ46 Platform – a front-wheel-drive, transverse powertrain layout.

The second generation Tiguan (MQB-AD), launched in 2016 as its replacement switched to Volkswagen’s Modular MQB Platform, underpinning nearly all transverse engine vehicles within the vast VW Group portfolio. MQB enabled VW’s global manufacturing plants to build any MQB derived vehicle – the Tiguan being manufactured or assembled in Germany, Mexico, China, Russia, Algeria, India, Malaysia and Indonesia. A long-wheelbase model, named Tiguan Allspace is also built in a number of these locations.

The popularity of the Tiguan, couple with the shift to crossover type vehicle in many larger global markets has meant hat the Tiguan is now the best-selling vehicle in the entire VW portfolio, exceeding the sales of the long-time VW Golf.

The Tiguan, in occupying the compact crossover segment is available in either all-wheel-drive (AWD) or Front-drive configurations. The powertrain lineup is exclusively 4-cylinder. Diesel engines range from 1.6L  Turbocharged (85 kW) to 2.0L Turbocharged (177 kW), while petrol engines range from 1.4L Turbo (92 kW) to 2.0L Turbo (235 kW).

The Tiguan underwent a minor visual facelift mid-2020, which also included the addition of a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.
