Austin FX4 Taxi - London Black Cab - a photo on Flickriver

            London - capital of the world.

At least it was the capital of the Great Empire, and it is still a great city of the world.

The city has evolved over time, but during the 20th Century its influence on culture was still significant. Music, theatre and film.

If you watched a film set in London, so long as you stepped outside for more than a minute, you no doubt would have seen an iconic red London double-decker bus. Less prominent, but more numerous is the London Black Cab.

The model shown here in the Austin FX4, launched in 1958. The model was continued under British Leyland ownership 1968-1982, before being build by original supplier Carbodies from 1982-1987.

So iconic is the shape and character of the car, that once the FX4 left production (after 75,000 had been produced), that it was replaced by an altogether new car, the LTI TX1 which was almost drawn as a caricature of the fifty year old FX4.

The model shown here is as it would have been configured in 1969, once the tail lamps were modified to Austin 1100/1300 units, and while the car was still built with full chrome bumpers and over-riders.
