Until the mid-seventies it was a place to run away from the air, now it is a favorite destination for lovers of thrilling rides. The history of the psychiatric hospital Antoni di Limbiate, known as the mental hospital of Mombello.
The 30 year old conditions for abandoning the over 40 thousand square meters of rooms, cells and corridors of the health facility are perceptible as soon as you enter the entrance threshold. The building of the asylum dates back to 1872, near the eighteenth century Villa Crivelli-Pusterla, the estate chosen by Napoleon to proclaim the Cisalpine Republic, and both are part of a plot of about one million square meters between fields, warehouses and pavilions in the North of Limbiate.

The Villaggio Mombello, in fact, considered as one of the ten most scary places in the world. At most of the capacity, it came to accommodate over 3,000 patients, including the illegitimate son of Mussolini, Benito Albino, who died interned in 1942. Separating the asylum from the rest of the world, a two-meter-high, three-kilometer-long wall was part of it and became part of the local imagination. “If you’re not good, I’ll take you to the wall,” grandparents told their restless grandchildren. Occasionally some patient stepped over him to escape. Today, however, override it to enter.
