E79000 Norwich (King's Scrapyard) - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the first of a number of transparencies taken by Suffolk photographer Brian Dyes, which I've kindly been given permission to share with you.
This is quite an historic picture which Brian took in 1965 depicting the very first BR production diesel multiple unit car awaiting its final fate at King's scrapyard in Norwich. 
Derby 'Lightweight' car E79000 was originally in a power twin formation with E79500 and was the first of eight sets introduced in June 1954 on local services to Harrogate and Bradford Exchange from Leeds Central. The West Yorkshire sets were easily identified by the absence of a central light on the front panel, something which became standard in subsequent batches.
The units suffered from sharing accommodation alongside the ash and grime of steam locomotives at Bradford Hammerton Street depot and were also hampered by having a unique transmission system which was denoted by the red triangle coupling code - just visible in this picture below the overhead warning flash. 
Deemed as non-standard the sets were all withdrawn in February 1964 after a very short life. E79000 ended its career with a small yellow warning panel as can be seen here and  all bar one car ended up at King's where they were dismantled.
