Makin' Monto

The now long closed Monto railway station still exists with a bit of sadly beckoning isolated track in front. There are some efforts being made to keep the old station and surrounds looking good as a bit of a railway memory and museum. Recent photos have links to data and history of the former loop railway from Mungar Junction in the south to Byellee (near Gladstone) in the north, both of which were on Queensland Railways North Coast line.

Monto was more or less the mid point on this meandering loop railway, each section being normally worked independently. The town therefore from a railway operating point took on more importance.

Along with the lengthy rail trail still being built in sections, a lot of infrastructure remains with the exception of most of the track which renders it no longer a railway at all.

The slab cement construction of the station building was widely used in much of Queensland.
