Passing traffic.

Seems like I have done a run around the city of Brisbane for today's shots but that's pretty normal for me. One of the icons of our city is the Story Bridge that stretches across the Brisbane River from Kangaroo Point on the south side to Fortitude Valley on the north side. I will put a link to its history at the bottom of this description. It is lit up at night now with colour changeable lights and is regularly lit to celebrate or commemorate events or people's achievements or lives.

Coming in from the left is a Kitty Cat ferry heading downstream. These are recent additions to the ferry fleet to replace the traditional and elderly wooden bodied craft that have been temporarily withdrawn for refurbishment and urgent repairs.

On the far side under the abutment of the bridge is the erstwhile Howard Smith Wharves. During the 19th and most of the 20th century these were important wharves but as shipping got larger and port facilities moved downstream, the area fell into abandonment and decay. In recent years, the whole area has been extensively rebuilt and refurbished and the old warehouses have been either rebuilt or replaced with modern facilities housing bars, restaurants, parks and outdoor entertainment areas. It has become a very popular attraction in an extremely attractive setting....looking out the view is across to Kangaroo Point and under the bridge to the city.

This area is on a major bend in the river and subject to the fastest currents when the river is in flood. Unfortunately for the residents above in the suburb of New Farm, the noise from this precinct has become quite disturbing. A long pathway/cycleway passes through the area also. It comes from New Farm Park/Merthyr via the Brisbane Riverwalk which is a jetty structure in the river (from the right) and extends for many kilometres past the city and botanic gardens towards Toowong and West End to the left.
