Turtle soup!

            I always enjoy finding something a bit unusual and we found this mass of turtles begging for food at the Chinese Gardens in the Botanical Gardens in Bundaberg, Queensland. The gardener told us they are always hungry - ya reckon? Apparently they swim over to the bridge when people turn up, eyes begging for food! 

Anyway, we are nearing the end and in many ways, I will be glad for a rest. We have pressed on with a lot of kilometres over 2.5 weeks, probably about 5500-6000. But it's given us a bit of a mental break, which is sort of what we, make that everyone needs. Not that we haven't heard the news on TV and radio umpteen times a day and had to sign the books and sanitise our hands to within an inch of our lives. Country folk up here in Queensland have done very well with this, it's when you walk through a shopping centre things get a bit hairy.

Talking about hairy, we were in sugar cane country today and low and behold, across the road, a rather large snake. My very quick look said red bellied black but who knows. I am no expert. Despite the car going over the top, it seemed to slide off the road quite happily. I wasn't about to look for it that was for sure. Haven't seen a snake like that for so long, can't remember the last. When I asked the lady at the cafe in the township of Wallaville where we met this snake what sort they had locally, she reeled off a list of the deadliest snakes in the world - taipans, mulgas, browns, red bellied blacks etc. When they harvest, flocks of birds swoop down catching all sorts of snakes, mice, bugs etc. that take refuge in the sugar cane during the growing months. Will bring a shot of that to you eventually...not close up though!!
