Tomar, Portugal - The Charola (octagon) of the Templars' Church

            The 16-sided Templar church at the Convent of Christ was built starting c. 1162, after the area was conquered from the Moors under King Afonso Henriques.  Templar churches were built in the round following the example of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.  Originally, it had nothing that corresponded to a nave.  A rectangular chapter house was added under King Manuel I during his extensive additions to and expansions of the convent/monastery between 1492 -1520.
