Tomar, Portugal - The Templars' Church in the Convento de Cristo

The 16-sided Templar church at the Convent of Christ (which rises like a great ship above the terrace and castle courtyard below) was built starting c. 1162.  Templar churches were built in the round following the example of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.  Originally, it had nothing that corresponded to a nave.  A rectangular chapter house (the building with the gothic spires and decorations to the left of the blank walls of the original church) was added under King Manuel I during his extensive additions to and expansions of the site between 1492 -1520.   Other renovations continued through 1562, resulting in the creation of a massive monastery/convent that superseded the former military functions of the site.  Philip II of Spain was proclaimed Portugal's king on the upper terrace to the left of the church in 1580.
