Rosa Belle Gregg French - a photo on Flickriver

This cabinet card was purchased on August 6, 2013, from the Tinker's Barn Antiques shop in South Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont.

I believe this woman is Rosa Belle Gregg French, Wisconsin-born younger daughter of Ezra Gregg and wife, Mary Odell. On September 8, 1894, she married Carrol Ned French, oldest son of Martin Ezra French.

Her son, Norman Gregg French, was born January 12, 1896 in Stowe, Vermont, and her daughter, Natalie, was born in 1897. Rosa died in 1899 of tuberculosis.

Montpelier, April 25, Carl Ned
French of Stowe was struck and In-
stantly killed by an automobile owned
and driven by J. P. Rabidou of North-
field last night on the road to Barre,
and his brother, James E. French with
whom he was walking, is at Heaton
hospital with a broken leg and a badly
cut and bruised head, and internal in-
juries are feared. Rabidou was placed
under arrest after a short investigation
by State's Attorney, Fred E. Gleason on
a charge of manslaughter. Bail was
fixed at $3,000, which was furnished at
two o'clock this morning by Dr. W. B.
Mayo and Charles A. Plumley of North-
field. A searching investigation in be-
ing conducted by the State's attorney.
The accident which resulted in the
death of one man and possible fatal
injuries to another, occurred shortly
after ten o'clock in front of the car
barns of the Barre & Monpelier Trac-
tion company, two miles from this city,
and almost directly in front of the
house of James French, where the two
brothers were going after walking from
Montpelier.

DEAD MAN HURLED 34 FEET

They were on the left side of the road,
according to the injured man, who ex-
plained thaqt they had turned out for
a team and the automobile, a powerful
Oldsmobile, was also going on the left
hand, the wrong side, proceeding
toward Barre. Mr. Rabidou last night
told the authorities that he had just
turned out for a team on the curve,
presumably the same one the men
turned aside for, and he did not see
the two pedestrians until directly upon
them. They did not state the rate of
speed the car was traveling, but as
the dead man was thrown or dragged
34 feet and the two victims were
found 72 feet apart in the roadway, it
is assumed that the machine was cov-
ering the ground at a rapid rate.
There were no witnesses of the accident
other than a second occupant of the
automobile, Harry Park of this city. A
hearing in the case will be held in
city court next Saturday morning.

NEAR DESTINATION WHEN KILLED

C. N. French was employed up to the
time of his death as motorman on the
Mount Mansfield Electric railroad, oper-
ating between Waterbury and Stowe, and
had arrived in Montpelier early in the
evening to spend the week-end with his
brother. They missed the ten o'clock car
out of Montpelier and decided to walk
the two miles. Within a few yards of
their destination, one was hurled to
death and the other may die as lock-
jaw is feared by physicians. The survivor
is employed by the Tenney company.
Gilbert Knapp, employed at the car
barn, heard the crash and rushed out into
the road. He found Rabidou with his
machine stopped and asked him what the
trouble was. Together they located the
two men and carried the injurted man
to his home. The body of the other man
was left in the road until Health Officer
Lindsay arrived. Dr. Grimes, Chief of Police
Connolly and Alderman Standish
were first on the scene from this city.

RABIDOU UNERVED BY ACCIDENT

Mr. Rabidou who is connected with
the Lumber company of the same name
at Northfield, seemed badly broken up
by the catastrophe, and had to be attend-
ed by a physician. He has, however, a
reputation as a fast driver and figured
in an accident last summer when he ran
into a carriage near the "Three-mile"
bridge, smashing it up badly and did not
even stop to see if anyone was injured.
He was caught and arrested in Water-
bury and paid damages.
The automobile suffered considerably
from the collision, the lamp and mud-
guard on the right side of the car being
completely demolished and the radiator
and engine being driven back into the
body of the car about two inches on
one side.
An inquest was held this afternoon in
the Volholm undertaking rooms, where
Mr. French was taken last night, several
physicians, including Health Officer Lind-
say and State's Attorney Gleason being
present. The examination lasted over
two hours.

TO-MORROW DEAD MAN'S BIRTH-
DAY

Carl Ned French was born in Water-
bury, April 27, 1859, and for 12 years he
drove a freight train from Waterbury to
Stowe until the construction of the elec-
tric railroad. Since its construction he
had been motorman for 16 years. He was
married to Rose Gregg of Stowe, who
died 16 years ago. He leaves, besides
his brother, two children, Norman of this
city, a conductor for the Barre & Mont-
pelier Traction company, and a daughter,
Natalie, of Stowe. The body will be
taken to Stowe Tuesday for funeral services at
the Methodist church and burial in the
village cemetery.

Montpeller, Nov. 18. J. P. Rabldou
of Northfleld, who has been on trial
In Washington county court since a
week ago Tuesday, was found guilty
of manslaughter to-day and Is there-
fore held legally responsible for the
night of April 24 on the Barre road.
The Jury was given the case Wednes-
day afternoon at five o'clock and
reached a verdict sometime after nine
o'clock. An exception on the verdict
was taken by the counsel for one re-
spondent and the case will probably
be taken to supreme court.
States Attorney Gleason was as-
sisted by Attorney-General Barber In
the prosecution and the respondent
was represented by Attorney Frank
Plumley, J. Ward Carver and William
White. Sentence was deferred by
Judge Waterman.
