This CDV is one of the strangest photographs I own. It was given to me by the great granddaughter of Civil War officer, Harlan Page Paige in hopes of learning more about it. I confess, I'm stumped. The man is a walking (er, standing) paradox. He looks like the Geico caveman in 19th century attire. His hair and beard are unkempt. His boots appear shiny and new, yet his pants are short and wrinkled about the knees. The coat seems to be in good shape, but the top hat has seen better days. The biggest mystery of all is the pose; with a hand inside the shiny satchel. Long exposures were the norm, so the pose is deliberate. This family was distributed between Vermont and Massachusetts. Strange, strange, strange.
