New dockside cranes - a photo on Flickriver

            Looking like something out of an H.G.Wells science fiction novel, these dockside cranes were the subject of the December 1963 Meccano Magazine cover. They are shown earning their keep in Avonmouth Docks, transhipping sacks from railway wagons to a vessel’s hold. The cranes were supplied by the noted manufacturer, Stothert & Pitt of Bath. The company was established in 1855 and was responsible for many innovations in cargo handling over the decades.

Stothert & Pitt was singularly unlucky to fall into the control of Robert Maxwell in 1986, via his Hollis Group. It went out of business three years later, its coffers no doubt emptied by this most scandalous and odious of tycoons. A management buy-out failed to save the company.
