The Decline of 63rd and Halsted, 9/11/2024 #3

            The stores, large and small, banks and movie theaters that radiated out from the intersection of 63rd and Halsted for a half mile in all four directions, creating the second-largest shopping district in terms of dollars after the Loop, are mostly history now. So is Englewood, which has a quarter of the population that it did in 1960. Sears, Wieboldt's, Jewel, Hillman's, Kresge's, L. Fish furniture, the Englewood and Southtown Theaters, all gone. In its place -- Kennedy-King College. A nice enough college, but you can't buy socks, a graduation suit, a living room couch or a flat-screen TV there. Oh well, at least there's still an el stop. And though they're no longer streetcars, the 8 Halsted and 63 CTA buses still run. But Whole Foods, the anchor of the mall at the northwest corner of 63rd and Halsted, is gone, replaced by a Save-a-Lot. Community activists fought like the devil to keep Save-a-Lot out of Whole Foods' former space. Realistically, what other grocery store would be moving in there? Jewel? Trader Joes? Let's get real.
