The nave and pulpit, St Mary's Church, Haseley, Warwickshire

            In 2020 one of our U3A Photographic visits is quite likely to be to two churches in Warwickshire named for St Mary - one a large early 18th century church in Warwick itself and the other a much smaller, simpler mediaeval church at Haseley, a few miles away, with many later features. Recently my friend Peter and I went to take a look.

According to Aidan McRae Thomson:-

'St Mary's at Haseley is quite small, a simple nave and chancel with a west tower, the details Perp or later Tudor though much of the actual fabric is Norman. Inside it has a nice, unrestored feel with only the east wall and window (along with the ill-fitting neo-norman porch) betraying Victorian intervention. The nave's wagon roof is old, as is the font, in which Charles Wesley's grandfather was baptised, thus I was told the church is a kind of birthplace of Methodism! In the chancel is a plain tomb with small but fine brasses to Clement Throckmorton and his family (d.1573). '
