Fives And Threes

            Morden station at the southern end of the Northern line is unusual in that it has three running lines and five platform faces. The three tracks continue through the station to the depot at the south end. Unlike practice on (all?) of the national rail network, at stations like Scarborough, Norwood Junction, Guildford and Ascot, train doors are opened on both sides of trains using platforms 3 and 4 at Morden.
 
Opened in 1926 by the City & South London Railway, Morden station was originally built on open farmland. The stations on the 1926 extension south from Clapham Common was the first major project on the London Underground for architect Charles Holden. Unlike the other stations built for the extension, the station platforms at Morden are not in tunnels, but in a wide cutting with the tunnel portals a short distance to the north. The tunnel portals are one end of the longest tunnel on the London Underground running just over seventeen miles to East Finchley via the Bank branch.
 
An early morning train from the depot runs into platform 3 and 4 prior to working it’s first journey of the day.
