A-4L Skyhawk, U. S. Marine Corps (147772), H&MS-31, South Carolina, Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort

            The A-4L Skyhawk was built by Douglas Aircraft for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marines Corps as a ground attack, carrier capable aircraft. The first A-4 aircraft was introduced into service in 1956 and was produced to 1979, variants going to the late 1980s.  The aircraft was extensively used in the Vietnam War in close air support missions.  By the late 1980s, the A-4 was deployed in a adversary training role. The USMC retired the aircraft in 1998, followed by the USN in 1998. 

The aircraft in the photograph--#147772-- has the markings of H&MS-31 , "Aggressors," a unit that provided adversary training for Marine Corps fighter pilots from 1965 to 1986.
