Missouri, Johnson County, Montserrat Recreational Demonstration Area; Knob Noster State Park, Visitor Center (Rear Elevation)

            The Knob Noster State Park Visitor Center was developed during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The CCC and WPA were designed to provide work for the unemployed workers during the Great Depression.  Knob Noster State Park, originally known as Montserrat National Recreation Demonstration Area, was transferred to the state of Missouri in 1946.

The visitor center at Montserrat National Recreation Demonstration Area was built under the direction of the National Park Service.  The Park Service designed structures to blend with the environment by using locally available materials.  Shapes of browns were commonly used to paint wooden structures built in the Rustic Style.
