Georgia, Camden County- Cumberland Island National Seashore, Dungeness Mansion Outer Gate

            The photograph is the outer gate leading to the former Dungeness Mansion. Thomas M. Carnegie and his wife Lucy Coleman Carnegie acquired a large tract of land on Cumberland Island in 1881 that included the old Dungeness Plantation mansion.  Thomas was the younger brother of steel baron Andrew Carnegie.  Thomas and Lucy built the new Dungeness Mansion in 1885. Thomas Carnegie died in 1886. Lucy Carnegie continued to acquire land and restored old estates on the island.  Eventually, Mrs Carnegie owned 16,000 acres- ninety percent of all land on the island.  Lucy Carnegie also built several homes on the island for her children: Plum Orchard Mansion for son George L. Carnegie, and Greyfield House for daughter Margaret "Retta" Carnegie.  

The Dungeness Mansion was the center of the Carnegie's operation.  At its peak, the operation employed a staff of 200-300 employees that produced and provided for most of the family's needs.  In 1916, Mrs Carnegie died. The 16,000 acres of Cumberland Island passed to the children and could not be sold while any of them lived. Lack of interest in the island and financial pressures created by the Depression led to the deterioration of the properties. The buildings were largely neglected and Dungeness Mansion burned in 1959. The Lucy Coleman Carnegie trust ended in 1962 and the property was divided and sold. In 1972, Congress established the Cumberland Island National Seashore. The National Park Service has since acquired most of the island with the exception of a number of reserve life estates and some scattered individually owned properties.  The ruins of the Dungeness Mansion were stabilized by the National Park Service. Other buildings at Dungeness are maintained. The property is within the Dungeness Historic District listed on National Register of Historic Places.
