MIchigan Central Railroad; New York Central Railroad, Michigan, Ypsilanti

            The Michigan Central Railroad built an elaborate three-story Victorian style depot with attached baggage house  in Ypsilanti in the mid 1860s.  A major fire in 1910 destroyed most of the building. The Michigan Central, essentially rebuilt the depot from the remains of the first floor of the original building.  New York Central Railroad, the parent owner of  Michigan Central, dissolved its subsidiary and operated out of the depot. Last Passenger service ended at the depot in the 1970s when commuter service to Detroit ceased. The depot went to private owners.  In 2016, when the photograph was taken, the building was vacant.  However, minimal rehabilitation work had occurred, including the building of a tower. The tower is probably a reference to the highly embellished tower of the original depot.
