Trucking Through Time! - a photo on Flickriver

            Standing over in Beamish Museum colliery yard is this fine pair of vintage trucks, demonstrating how diesel power succeeded steam power, their ages being only a little over twenty years apart.

On the left is a well preserved 1952-built Scammell 20LA  ballast tractor unit, UK registered XMM 73. This particular one is called "Perseverance", is powered by a Gardner diesel engine and is operated by AJ Wakefield of Easington Lane, County Durham, although it was originally used by Guiness for haulage around London. It is now rigged as a generator truck.

On the right is Foden steam wagon No.13218 "Cestria", built in 1928, UK registered BUP 71 and weighing 7.5 tons. It was built, and worked, as a six-wheel timber tractor and was cut down to this form, as a four-wheeler, in early preservation. It has remained with the Thompson family for almost seventy years.
