1943 White M3 Half-Track - a photo on Flickriver

1943 White M3 Half-Track

            Standing on the Events Field at Beamish Museum is this wonderfully restored 1943 US Army, White M3A1 Half-Track number 402686, affectionately called "Ellie Ray", and now UK civilian registered UYJ 903.

The M3 Half-track was designed for the US Army to transport soldiers as part of an armoured advance. It had a rear entrance for troops and its sides were lightly armoured for protection against shell fragments. M3 half-tracks were armed with .30 or .50-calibre machine guns to provide fire support during an assault. 

These vehicles were also used to haul supplies, evacuate the wounded, and act as mobile communication bases. They had an impressive top speed of 45mph!

The M3 was introduced in 1941 and made by the White Motor Company of Cleveland, Ohio (USA). By the end of production 40,000+ such vehicles had been made.
