Barclay 0-4-0WT No.1994 "Glyder"

            Standing outside it's engine shed in the colliery sidings at Beamish Museum (and trying very hard to use a sprouting tree as camouflage) is Andrew Barclay 0-4-0WT "Glyder" (Works No.1994), a two foot gauge locomotive of 1931.

"Glyder" was built for the Durham County Water Board for use at the extensive Burnhope Reservoir development in Weardale in the early 1930's, where it was given the uninspiring name "Grey". 

At the end of the contract in 1938 it was sold to Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales and renamed "Glyder" (after a range of peaks of the same name in Snowdonia). It spent most of it's working life in Penrhyn quarry and, when it was withdrawn in 1965, it was sold and exported to the USA along with several other redundant narrow gauge locomotives. Whilst there it saw no use at all and remained in storage for it's entire time in the US. 

It was repatriated to the UK around 2012 and eventually found it's way, on long term loan, to Beamish Museum for restoration. In it's restored form it still carries it's "working clothes" in the Penrhyn Quarry livery.
