            I had the completely unexpected pleasure of experiencing the King of the Surf Guitar in person when he played an hour-long set at the California State Fair. He had been signing autographs earlier in the day; one of the exhibits at the fair is about the history of Rock and Roll in the United States.

Dick Dale was an early and highly influential rock and roll guitar player; he and his band, the Deltones, were known for their "surf" rock sound. One of his songs, "Misirlou," is quite prominent in the movie "Pulp Fiction."

On this night, he really seemed to be enjoying himself. He insisted on audience participation, stating that he "couldn't keep time" without our help.

On the right is his son, Jimmy Dale, a very accomplished guitar player in his own right.
