AMTK 43 East - a photo on Flickriver

AMTK 43 East

            Amtrak Train 11, the southbound Coast Starlight, rolls timetable east at milepost 47.5, just east of Altamont Pass on Union Pacific's Oakland Subdivision. The train detoured via Altamont and Tehachapi passes due to track work on the Coast Line in Southern California. AMTK 43, a GE P42DC, is on the point.

UP's Oakland Sub is the former First Subdivision of the Western Pacific Railroad. Former Southern Pacific right-of-way can be seen below and to the right. The bridge in the background crosses over both the former SP and Altamont Pass Road.

The inspiration for this shot came from a photo on page 34 of Ken Meeker's book The Western Pacific.
