California OES -- HRF-1

(Photo by Charles Madderom) This is a scan of a slide that I purchased for my collection. The photo is dated July 30, 1984, and was taken in front of Sacramento Fire Station 4.

Heavy Rescue-Fire 1 was the first of at least three such apparatus built for the California Office of Emergency Services (OES) in the 1980s. It was a Ford C8000 with a Fabco 4x4 retrofit and a 1983 Westates body. It had a 1000-GPM pump, a 567-gallon water tank, and carried 50 gallons of foam. It also had front and rear winches with docking for an A-frame.

HRF-1 was initially assigned to the Sacramento Fire Department, where it was occasionally used as a reserve engine. Later, it was assigned to the Citrus Heights Fire District in northeastern Sacramento County; there, it was used as both a reserve engine and a reserve squad. It is no longer on the state roster.

I remember that my father drove this beast at least once when it filled in for Sacramento Engine 8, where he was the apparatus operator on C-shift (he called it the "Herf"). Several years later, it occasionally ran out of Citrus Heights Station 23--my neighborhood firehouse--when it filled in for Engine or Squad 23. By the end of the 1980s, it had been replaced at CHFD by a regular OES Type 1 engine.
