One of only two left I believe. - a photo on Flickriver

            For those who don't venture onto Facebook or keep up with goings on at Reliance Bus Works, we had this arrive in the past few days.
It is of course a Seddon RU, with bodywork built by their off-shoot company Pennine Coachcraft. The RU was fishing in the same pond as the well respected Bristol RE, but never achieved the sales, reliability or respect the latter did. The RU's drive-line was compromised by having a physically long horizontal Gardner engine mounted under the floor at the rear, coupled to a SCG semi-auto gearbox. The layout didn't allow for a very long prop-shaft which caused problems. The situation was worse on the 10m examples where a bespoke (and consequently expensive) design was required. The RE it will be recalled had its gearbox forward of the rear axle, driven through the dip in the dropped centre unit, than back to the axle.  Brakes could also be worryingly inconsistent on the RU from a drivers point of view. Like most of Britain's 'first' generation of rear engined single deckers, chassis flexing caused severe structural issues in the body . . . particularly the roof.
Anyway, its always good to have something different on which to work. STJ 847L was new to Fylde Borough Transport (aka Lytham St. Annes Corporation) and is believed to be one of only two of the type left. RUs had a bit of history in Newcastle under Lyme as the mighty Crosville once operated about 100 of them, some of which ventured into North Staffordshire. None of those of Crosville survived. The final PSV operator of STJ 847L was East End Coaches of Clydach, South Wales in whose livery we see it here. The operator built up quite a collection of them, based famously on their fuel frugality, so not all bad then!
