PMT's Leyland Bison. - a photo on Flickriver

            Sorry about the quality of the image, it's from my earliest days of bus photography as a teenager in the late '70s.
Back in those days, practically every bus company of any size had their own recovery vehicle ... sometimes more than one, staffed by members of their own garage. Before several changes in legislation, bespoke recovery vehicles ran on Trade Plates too. HGV road tax at the time was a crippler.
PMT, like most other large companies were for many years the proud owner of a WWII AEC Matador, which again like many other operators, they customised. By mid '70s such a machine was a bit long in the tooth so a newer 'wrecker' was purchased, this took the form of a Leyland Bison, complete with fixed head 500 series engine which they saw as their new standard (!). Besides the Bison, a couple of RESLs were adapted for straight bar towing too, though clearly in this picture the stricked PDR1 Atlantean needed something more serious. The photo was taken on Hanley Bus Station circa 1977/8. The single decker on the right hand side of the shot is an Alexander 'W Type' bodied Daimler Fleetline.
