The coat of arms in an elegant cartouche is set against a grey obelisk, set above the inscription and flanked by lamps (now without their flames). The inscription is framed by consoles, plain except for flowing floral decoration, in a lighter veined marble continued in the apron with a winged angel head looking across to the pulpit and the companion monument to John Dawson on the left. Thomas Scott was the church’s minister from 1709 to 1746. His service of 37 years was much longer than those of any predecessor and may explain this commemoration, more elaborate than others in the church. The handling and choice of coloured marble reflect John Ivory’s (1727-1837) apprenticeship to Robert Page in 1741. The monument may well be later than 1746, when Ivory was only 19, since he advertised that he had taken over Francis Stafford’s workshop on Tombland in 1748, and the matching monument to John Dawson, the deacon during Scott’s ministry, must be ten years later. The design was adapted from Page’s ca. 1750 Monument to Sir John Rous and family in St Peter Wangford, apparently his earliest example of a comparable design.
