Set on the north wall of the chancel the shrouded figures lie under a curved arch on separate stepped tomb slabs, their eyes closed, one hand resting on top of the shroud, the other wrapped in it. Tombs with shrouded figures became popular in seventeenth century England, but this is the earliest in Norfolk. The tomb is framed by black marble columns supporting the architrave, decorated with angel heads, curiously reversed. Peck’s coat of arms is set between curved cartouches decorated with slightly clumsy putti leaning on skulls. Above them a Latin inscription is set in the elaborate frame to  record William’s death in 1634. Underneath two further inscriptions note that what was flesh is now dust, ‘kept in trust by this kind ground..til it starts refind; for then this clay shall evn’s a sunne appear at that great day.’

William Peck, was one of the sixteen children of Thomas and Ursula Peck. Before his death in 1591 Thomas had been Sheriff and Mayor (twice) of Norwich. William, who had married Alice Guibon, built Spixworth Hall in 1607 on the estate of over a hundred and sixty acres. Demolished in 1955 old photographs show a central block (remodelled and filled in during the nineteenth) framed by projecting wings with wide curved gables, echoed by stepped ones  at the rear flanking tall chimney stacks and a narrow entrance block. The native Flemish idiom of the architecture is at odds with the classicism of the tomb, which has been attributed to a London firm, either that of  Thomas Stanton or Edward Marshall.
