Portland Head Lighthouse Maine - a photo on Flickriver

            ***  I was able to go out on a boat From Portland to have a look at some of the lighthouses and islands off the mainland . This was certainly the most striking of the lighthouses we saw that afternoon 

Situated along the shore of Cape Elizabeth, Portland Head Light sits at the entrance of the shipping channel into Casco Bay. The lighthouse, a commission of George Washington, is Maine’s oldest, dating to 1791. The buildings alongside are not quite as old the former Lighthouse keepers’ house which was built in 1891 as a duplex for the head Keeper and the Assistant Keeper and their families.

A totally irrelevant observation on baseball feel free to skip

Its probably due to the lockdown but I thought I would investigate American baseball. I have never understood baseball but I read up un the rules for a couple of days  and then watched my first full game on You Tube It was the New York Yankees playing at the Minnesota Twins in July 2019 . It was described as one of the best games of 2019  . 

This game lasted over 5 hours in play.  In all that time the batters of both teams managed  to hit the ball only 35 times onto the part of the ground that counts. Imagine watching a days cricket and only thirty five balls are hit all day .The final score was 14-12 to the Yankees  the commentators described it as an incredible “Slugfest “ whatever that means

The batting lacked elegance it was just one almighty slog that usually missed the ball anyway . The pitching lacked variety no combination of pace and spin there were sliders dippers and curved balls but the average county cricket bowler can make the ball speak a lot more.

On a positive note  I was impressed by the catchers ( wicket keepers )  of both sides they have really great reflexes . They had to be good as so few balls are actually hit by the batters .  The highlight of the five hours was a great catch in the deep by a chap called Aaron Hicks  which was brilliant he was aided of course by having a huge glove. In cricket people are expected to catch a hard ball moving at over a 100 mph with bare hands . Anyway it was interesting to see a game of baseball and I might watch another to see if this one was particularly slow.
