Lights, camera, beer! - a photo on Flickriver

Taken for the Active Assignment Weekly! group. This week's assignment: Environmental Portraits

What it took
I've never taken a portrait picture before, so I didn't need the extra challenge of shooting someone I did not know well. Instead I picked my husband. Since he is very much into photography and learning off camera flash, I wanted to incorporate his equipment (now ours I've been informed) into my photo. The setting is at our picnic table with him holding his camera and a beer (his other favorite thing). I wanted the umbrellas in the photo, but also wanted them to provide lighting for him. I exposed for the ambient light, and then lowered the ambient exposure a couple stops,so that the strobes would be the dominant light. I made some adjustments in Capture NX, brightened the Barnacle Bill's sign in the background (another prop), and sharpened using the high pass filter.
