La nuit s’était abattue sur la ville comme une chape de plomb, étouffant les bruits habituels du quartier. Seule une fine bruine tombait, dessinant des arabesques brillantes sur le bitume fissuré. L’éclairage public vacillait, lançant des éclats maladifs sur les façades lépreuses des immeubles. À chaque pas, mes semelles collaient au sol détrempé, laissant derrière moi des empreintes éphémères aussitôt englouties par l’obscurité.

Une odeur de métal rouillé flottait dans l’air, mêlée à celle plus âcre de la pluie stagnante. Au loin, une enseigne clignotante grésillait nerveusement, projetant sur le trottoir l’ombre déformée d’un mannequin abandonné derrière une vitrine sale. Son bras levé paraissait me faire un signe que je préférais ignorer.

Je ralentis. Une silhouette se détacha d’une allée latérale. Immobile. Juste là, à la limite du cercle blafard dessiné par un réverbère. Trop figée pour être anodine, trop indistincte pour que je distingue ses traits. Un souffle d’air glacé me fit frissonner, et un frémissement parcourt ma nuque.

Puis, sans un bruit, la silhouette recula lentement, happée par les ténèbres.

Un frisson parcourut mon dos.

L’impression d’être observé ne me quittait plus.
