UP 4014 Pomona CA

            From 1974 to 1980, when I was a teenager, I along with my old brother, were the caretakers for the UP 4014 Big Boy at the Southern California Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society (RLHS) at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. 

When I first arrived, the locomotive did not have its iconic UP shield right below the headlight. Plus the number board boxes on the left and right of the headlight were blanked off with metal sheets. 

I obtained some clear plastic sheets and proceeded to cut them into shape as well as cut some numbers out of manila folders. After fixing the numbers to the plastic I painted the plastic black, after which I pulled off the numbers and sprayed their shadows white. I also installed lightbulbs behind the number boxes for illumination. And that’s what you see in this photo. 

Bill Fletcher, the president of the Southern California chapter owned and operated a metal shop. He was able to cast the UP 4014 shield after which we welded the casting to the plate below the headlight. 

Anyway, some interesting and fun memories. As a teenager I was having a blast learning intimately about and caring for such an incredible piece of railroad history.
