An extended lunch break allowed for a quick visit to the East 34th Street heliport, which opened in 1972 as a replacement for the heliport atop the Pan Am Building, which closed in 1968. Dwarfed by the famous elevated FDR Drive, I found the heliport surprisingly busy, with several Bell Jet- and LongRangers landing and departing. The real gem, however, was this Sikorsky S.58T of New York Helicopter, registered as N26567 and awaiting its next sortie.

The S.58T is a turbine conversion of the S.58/H-34 piston powered helicopter, accommodating 2 pilots and up to 16 passengers. New York Helicopter used several examples on scheduled services between Manhattan heliports and New York's Kennedy, La Guardia and Newark airports, on sightseeing flights and occasional VIP and charter flights.

N26567 was built in 1962 as HSS-1N BuAer 150742 for the US Navy, and later flew with the West German Army before returning to the US and getting its turbine conversion in the mid-1970s. After a stint in Denmark, it was acquired by New York Helicopter in late 1982, giving flawless service for over 20 years before it was retired and scrapped in the mid-2000s.
