101 was one of two Tupolev 154s in service with the Polish Air Force, and operated on behalf of the Government of Poland. Built in 1990 for LOT Polish Airlines, the Tu.154 was instead delivered to the Air Force, initially serialled as 837. By 1996 it had become 101, was operated by 36.SPLT from Warszawa, and was painted in the then new government livery, complete with "Republic of Poland" titles on starboard side, and "Rzeczpospolita Polska" on port side.

As such, 101 was captured about to lift-off from runway 28 for the ferry flight back to Warszawa, after bringing in the Polish delegation for the 2004 WEF at Davos.

101 continued in government service until April 2010, when it crashed at Smolensk, Russia, in the much publicised accident that killed 88, including the President of Poland and other high-ranking officials. The Tu.154 was approaching Smolensk in below-minima conditions, hitting trees on finals and plunging into a forest 500 meters from the runway.
