The Avro Shackleton was a British long-range maritime patrol aircraft, and a total of 185 were built between 1951 and 1958. The majority of the aircraft went to the Royal Air Force, where some examples served until 1991. Eight examples were ordered by South Africa, and were delivered to the South African Air Force between 1957 and 1958. They were assigned single-letter codes between J and Q.

The first Shackleton delivered to the SAAF entered service in August 1957, and was serialled 1716 and coded J. All eight were operated by 35 Squadron, mainly patrolling the sea lanes around the Cape of Good Hope and flying SAR missions. 1716/J was captured taking a break at Waterkloof, showing its Rolls Royce Griffon engines with contra-rotating propellors, and the tip tanks unique to the MR.3 variant.

After being struck off charge in 1984, 1716 was sent to the SAAF Museum at Swartkop for preservation, but in 1994 it was fully restored to flying condition by SAAF volunteers. The aircraft was scheduled to participate in the 1994 Military Air Tattoo at Fairford, UK. It departed Cape Town for Fairford on 12 July 1994, with stops planned at Libreville, Abidjan and Lisbon. In the night of 13 July 1994 when flying over the Sahara desert, however, two engines on the same wing failed within 10 minutes, without their propellers going into proper feathering. Asymmetric forces began to gain upper hand, the aircraft was loosing height and a crash landing was invevitable. The Shackleton came down in sands in the West Sahara/Mauritania border region, with no serious injuries to the crew of 19, but was sadly a write-off.
