JA8906 was one of over 40 747-400s in service with the Japanese flag carrier, and was delivered new from the manufacturer in March 1993 to then Japan Air Lines. Upon the merger with Japan Air System, the international division of JAL became Japan Airlines International, while JAS became Japan Airlines Domestic. Both divisions were merged in 2006, to form today's Japan Airlines.

JA8906 was part of the international fleet, and was captured lined-up on runway 16, ready to go for the return charter flight to Tokyo. The 747 was fitted with special decals, showing a Douglas DC-6 in original size and thus giving an interesting comparison with the size of a modern 747-400. The special markings were in commemoration of JAL's first international flight in early 1954, operated by a DC-6B from Tokyo via Wake Island and Honolulu to San Francisco and taking 31 hours. On that day in June 2004, JA8906 just needed a little over 12 hours to reach Tokyo from Zürich.

By early 2007 the 747 was converted to a freighter, and in 2010 it was sold to Kalitta Air. Becoming N743CK, it was operated by Kalitta for DHL in full DHL colours until early 2024, when it was retired and stored at Oscoda-Wurtsmith.
