9M-MRD ¦ ZRH 01.03.2006

On this day, Malaysian's 777 9M-MRD left on the scheduled Zürich to Kuala Lumpur service around lunch time, but after about one hour into the flight, I got an SMS that it was returning with a technical problem. No time given, but of course I rushed out to the landing spot as Malaysian's planes could never be taken on landing as they arrived early in the morning in darkness.

Not taking into account, however, that the 777 had to dump fuel first, it became a chilly and windy afternoon waiting for 9M-MRD, but eventually it turned up for runway 16, showing its splendid Freedom of Space/Blue Hibiscus livery. Rescue services were in attendance, but the landing was absolutely unveventful. A most lovely shot, well worth the pain of waiting in the cold, as this was undoubtedly the most beautiful 777 ever taking to the skies. The Blue Hibiscus livery was worn between 2005 and 2008.

9M-MRD was built and delivered to Malaysian in 1997, and remained in service with the Malaysian flag carrier until being shot down over the war territory of the Ukraine in 2014, on the infamous flight MH17 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
