Twisted Moss & Fern Covered Ancient Oak Trees, Wistman's Wood, Dartmoor, Devon

            Wistman's Wood is one of Britain's last remaining ancient temperate rainforests and one of three remote high-altitude oakwoods on Dartmoor in Devon. The first written document to mention Wistman's Wood date to the 17th century, while more recent tree-ring studies show that individual trees could be many hundreds of years old.

At the heart of the West Dart Valley is Wistman’s Wood National Nature Reserve, important for its fragile mosses and lichens. The wood is home to the incredibly rare Horsehair lichen (Bryoria smithii) which is found at only two sites in Britain. This upland oak wood is a piece of our own rainforest.
