Running after Mother - a photo on Flickriver

            One of the Spill Road cubs bounding after Mother. We spent time in other parts of the park till the crazy traffic jams around this cub subsided towards late morning, and had lunch parked next to this open area on spill road. We were talking quietly soon after lunch when one of us noticed the mother sitting to the left of us and watching us. She may have been there a while while we were unawares. We got the jeep into position and took a few picts of her as she took cover behind a rock and then moved out of site. It was then that the tracker noticed one of the cubs asleep in the tall grass in front of us! He would have been there all the while not more than 10 feet from us as we had lunch. Unfortunately, the sound of another jeep spooked it. We were alone till then. An hour or so passed when another vehicle came along with two well-travelled Australians who had had poor luck. We told them of our recent encounter with the mother and one of the cubs. I had just told them to hang around as you never know what they will do next when all three of them broke out of hiding to our right and bounded across the open grass out of sight. This was the one of a few shots possible in the few seconds available. Waited till it was time to head to the gates, but did not see them again. Maybe the mother had come to call them to a new kill elsewhere.
