The North Cascades - a photo on Flickriver

The North Cascades

            This week I took a trip to the North Cascades National Park to see the fall foliage before the highway running through the park closes for the season. In the morning I was nervous as the Skagit valley where I stayed was covered in thick sheets of overcast cloud, but once I reached the mountains they opened into windows through which the sun would occasionally pour through and light up the scenery in fleeting golden light.

While I was in the park I hiked the Maple Pass loop and probably took an hour and a half more than I would have if not for the dozens of stops I made to sit and watch the clouds roll over snowy peaks that stretched as far as I could see in every direction.
