Red-breasted Merganser - a photo on Flickriver

            Red-breasted mergansers breeding distribution stretches from Alaska to the Great Lakes to the east coast of Canada. While this is an extensive area the majority of the birds are located on the coasts. Wintering habitats are extremely coastal bound with the Pacific coast housing wintering birds from Alaska to Baja California. While limited red-breasted mergansers winter around the Great Lakes, the majority of the eastern population winters on the Atlantic & Gulf Coasts stretching into northern Mexico as well.
