Ice Crystals on Glass - a photo on Flickriver

            This composition is of ice crystals as they presented on a pane of glass that is part of a house deck railing.  These ice deposits are typically referred to as "frost."

The crystals deposit when the temperature on the outside of the glass is below freezing, and much cooler than the temperature bathing the inside of the glass. This causes moisture in the air to condense on the glass, and this condensation then transforms into ice crystals.

I enjoy observing these crystal formations. I consider them as examples of "Art & Architecture in Nature." 

"The unique ice patterns are the result of very tiny imperfections in the glass, such as scratches, specks of dust or salt, or the residue from washer fluid,” says Chloe Moore from the Royal Meteorological Society in an article for the BBC.

“These variations in the surface affect the way that the ice crystals form and branch out, forming the beautiful patterns.”
