Saint Nicholas Church, Bucharest, Romania

            St. Nicholas Russian Church stands at the heart of Bucharest, Romania, near University Square. The construction of this Russian Orthodox church was initiated in 1905 by Russian Ambassador Mikhail Nikolaevich Giers. Initially intended for the use of legation employees and the Russian community in the capital, the church was completed in 1909.

During World War I, as the Central Powers prepared to occupy Bucharest, the church was closed. All valuable items and archives were transported to Iași and then further to Saint Petersburg, where they disappeared during the Russian Revolution of 1917. Following the death of the old Russian priest, in 1935, the church was transferred to the authority of the Romanian Government. It was then designated for the use of students and professors at the University of Bucharest.

In 1947, responding to Soviet authorities' request, the church was once again placed under the Patriarchate of Moscow. A new Russian priest was appointed, and funds were provided for refurbishment. However, in 1957, Patriarch Alexius I decided to return the church to the Romanian Orthodox Church, leading to another round of restoration.

The church was reconsecrated in 1967, and in 1992, it was once again dedicated to the students and professors at the University of Bucharest. Due to its current congregation, it is also commonly referred to as Biserica studenților ("The students' church").
