West Midlands Trains 172 at Tysely - a photo on Flickriver

            The British Rail class 172 is a member of Bombardier Turbostar range of trains. They were delivered as a 2 or 3 car sets to London Overground and Chiltern. Two of the four subclasses have an electrostar style front (with end gangways) and the other two have the standard turbostar fronts. The 172s are being replaced by a variety of different stock such as 'Civity' trains from CAF and 'Aventras' from Bombardier. These members of the turbostar fleet differ from the standard in the UK, as they use a mechanical transmission, instead of hydraulic or electric. These units still operate a variety of services around the West Midlands and still reliably carry passengers 15 years after they were introduced.
