Intel i82586 Lan Coprocessor Die Shot

            Die shot of an Intel i82586 / p82586 LAN coprocessor, using my new digital microscope. This chip came out in the early 1980s and it was used to offload LAN related processing tasks from the main CPU. This chip has two distinct sections. The left side is the receive unit which handles low-level networking, and contains the transmitter and receiver. The left side also contains control circuitry and registers. The right side is the command unit, which contains a simple processor core which interfaces with the computers memory and main processor.
